Derrick Sharp (born October 5, 1971 in Orlando, Florida) is an American-Israeli former professional basketball player who played as a shooting guard and point guard. He is widely considered one of the most beloved figures and iconic team captains in Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball history.
Sharp played college basketball for the South Florida Bulls before moving to Israel in 1993. After stints with Maccabi Hadera and Hapoel Migdal HaEmek, he signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1996, spending 15 consecutive seasons with the club (1996-2011) until retiring at age 39.
During his 15-year tenure with Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sharp won 29 major titles: 3 European club championships (SuproLeague 2001, EuroLeague 2004 and 2005), 13 Israeli League championships, and 11 Israeli State Cups.
His most famous moment occurred on April 8, 2004, in the Top 16 EuroLeague round against Zalgiris Kaunas. Trailing by 3 points with 2.2 seconds left, Sharp received a full-court pass from Gur Shelef and hit a legendary buzzer-beating 3-pointer ('Miracle of Zalgiris'). Maccabi won in overtime, advanced to the Tel Aviv Final Four, and captured the EuroLeague title.
Sharp also earned 84 caps for the Israeli National Team. Following his retirement, he served as assistant coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv under David Blatt.
